About The Northgate

The Northgate is a beautiful Georgian hotel that mixes a classic French style with modern touches. The hotel is home to Bury St Edmunds' first ever Chef’s Table where up to 12 guests can choose from a specially prepared tasting menu and witness first-hand a busy kitchen in action. The bar is a mecca for cocktail lovers and the large south facing terrace is open all day for eating and drinking.

The rooms

The Northgate’s 10 individually-designed en-suite bedrooms are furnished with a mix of traditional and antique furnishings. All have large windows and high ceilings typical of a Georgian building.

The decor is opulent but relaxed, with oversized headboards, chic French-style furniture, indulgent fabrics and luxurious Noble Isle toiletries. Some rooms have standalone claw-foot baths in the bedrooms. All rooms have modern facilities such as WiFi, flat screen TV/DVD players and luxury bathroom fittings.

On the doorstep and nearby

The Suffolk market town of Bury St Edmunds has a striking mix of history. Look out for the Norman tower next to the cathedral, the 18th century Pakenham Mill, still turning and producing flour, and the Georgian splendour of the Athenaeum.

Home to one of the most important monasteries in medieval Europe, Bury St Edmunds has witnessed feuding, intrigue, scandal and triumph in its past. Today the town has established itself as one of Britain's fine dining hotspots. The Angel, Maison Bleue and Pea Porridge are amongst the most celebrated restaurants.

Worth staying in for ...

It has to be the bar in the evening - the cocktail menu focuses on locally sourced ingredients, a theatrical element and classics with a contemporary twist.

Need to know

Children are welcome, with cots and extra beds available for an extra £15 per night (not including breakfast). Smaller portions from the menu are available. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed.
